The command palette
One field that reaches everything Fold can do. Press Ctrl+K, start typing what you want, and press Enter.
It's the fastest way around the app once you know your way about. There is no hunting for a button, and no remembering which chord does what, because the palette shows you the chords as you go.
What's in it
Open it without typing anything and you see everything, in groups:
| Group | What's in it |
|---|---|
| Create | New todo, New list |
| Go to view | Today, Tomorrow, Next 7 days, Summary, Search |
| Go to list | Every list you have, with its colour |
| App | Settings, Help |
Type to narrow it down. The groups stay, and empty ones drop away.
It forgives typos
You don't have to spell a command exactly. "sumary" finds Summary, "serch" finds Search, and "setings" finds Settings. That matters when you're typing fast and watching the results rather than the keyboard.
It's forgiving, not psychic: it's matching what you typed against the name, so dropping most of the letters ("tmrw" for Tomorrow) is a step too far. Type the first few letters instead. "tom" is enough, and the best match is highlighted straight away, so anything you reach for often is a few letters and Enter.
Moving around
| Key | Does |
|---|---|
| ↓ / ↑ | Move down and up the list |
| Ctrl+N / Ctrl+P | The same, without leaving the home row |
| Enter | Run the highlighted command |
| Esc | Close without doing anything |
You can click a row too, and hovering one highlights it.
On a phone or tablet
There's no Ctrl+K to press, so the palette has a button: the >_ circle floating at the bottom of the screen, next to New todo. Both stay within reach of a thumb, and they're there whether or not the sidebar is open.
On a computer with the sidebar collapsed, the same pair appears in the same place. With the sidebar open, the >_ button sits at the top of it, beside New todo.
The keyboard hints along the bottom of the palette are hidden on a touch device, since there's no keyboard to press them on.
What it doesn't do
It doesn't search your todos. Typing "milk" won't find the todo about milk. The palette is for commands, and Search (Ctrl+Shift+5) is for todos. Keeping them apart means neither set of results buries the other.
It doesn't act on a particular todo. There's no "complete this" or "delete this" in here. Those live on the todo itself. Right-click a row, or open it.
It won't sign you out. That's in Settings, deliberately: it's not something you want a stray Enter to do.
Ctrl, on every platform
Like the rest of Fold's shortcuts, the palette uses Ctrl, even on a Mac. ⌘+K won't open it. See keyboard shortcuts for the full list, and for when shortcuts stand down.
